(SAN JOSE, Calif. And Bangalore, India) Sept. 17, 2008 – The Tech Museum declared Decentralised Energy Systems India Pvt. Ltd. [DESI Power] one of the 25 winners from among 329 outstanding candidates and hundreds of nominations representing 68 countries. DESI Power is the ‘best of the best’ technologists whose innovations benefit humanity.
The Tech Awards 2008: Technology Benefiting Humanity is one of the premier annual humanitarian awards programs in the world, recognizing technical solutions that benefit humanity and address the most critical issues facing our planet and its people. The awards program honors 25 scientists and innovators annually alongside the recipient of the Global Humanitarian Award.
DESI Power’s Employment and Power (EmPower) Partnership Program provides a tested working solution in which power plants, micro-enterprises, businesses and energy services are build simultaneously in a village jointly with local partners. Affordable and reliable electricity makes local micro-enterprises profitable and thus bankable as also attractive for private entrepreneurs. Profitable micro-enterprises and new wage earners in their turn become dependable buyers of adequate amounts of electricity and energy services to make the power plants profitable. Village partners take the responsibility for, and profit from, supplying biomass for the power plants.

DESI Power and its local partners train local managers, staff and micro-entrepreneurs in enterprises and business ventures such as briquetting, chuda mill & paddy processing, rice huller & wheat mills, pumping & selling irrigation water, providing lighting for domestic and market-place applications, charging batteries, supplying process heat. New ventures such as modern cooking fuels for energy efficient stoves, clean drinking water supply, ice making and cold storage and assembly of LED lights are also planned.

A training centre, DESI Power Management Training Centre for Rural Women (DESI_MANTRA) has been training local people for all levels of staff and managerial positions and is focused mainly on training as many women as possible for taking direct responsibility.

Coinciding with the coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol on 16th Febrary,2005 , DESI Power launched its ‘100 Village Empower and Partnership Program’ in Araria district, Bihar (India), wherein 100 small biomass gasification based power plants would be linked to energy services and micro industries. Each of these 75-50kW plants will create 50 direct and indirect jobs and eradicate poverty of the participating families
The Employment and Power Partnership Program has been validated and registered by UNFCCC, in order to sell half a million tones of CO2 over a period of 10 years from the program.
Currently, DESI Power is operating four plants under the 100 Village Empower and Partnership program. 20 plants will be built in the next phase of the project: they are expected to achieve financial closure by the end of this year.
